The Tangential

Don't be boring. Don't suck.

Subjects That People Should Stop Writing Essays About

Lady Gaga: There is almost nothing interesting you can say about Lady Gaga. There’s already so much pretense around “the meaning” of her persona that any attempt you make to explain it or dispel it will not be meaningful enough to meet the level of meaningfulness that Lady Gaga-thinker-abouters desire. The pretense around Born this Way is like an alien shield that deflects all interesting conversation.

Odd Future: Every argument about Odd Future will only prove one thing – they’re divisive. Either you think they’re disgustingly offensive, or you think people need to loosen up. I feel like I read something arguing it’s incorrect to say they’re the product of a generation raised on Eminem, and that was kind of interesting, but for every argument I remember are 10 essays blaming them for rape culture and blaming their haters for whiney culture.

Facebook: I admit, I’ve written plenty of posts about Facebook. Stick that word in the title, and thou shalt receive hits. But now that every possible sociological angle of Facebook+TwentysomethingsxYour-Parents-Are-on-There-Now has been covered, so let’s quit accidentally copying other essays that already exist.

Twentysomethings/Hipsters: Again, guilty, guilty, I confess. By now these subjects have been run over by a Prius blasting Cut Copy. I’m not saying we shouldn’t write about things related to twentysomethings or hipsters, but let’s at least give our headlines a break from those words.

The Early Days of the Internet: Megan Boyle wrote about her early Internet behavior once, including looking at Beanie Babies online, and I thought, “Why the crap didn’t I write that first?” Apparently, a lot of people have thought this and written it anyway, but it’s been done y’all. It’s been done.

What about debating in person about Facebook? I never tire of having a few drinks and getting my rant on about how Facebook/Twitter/Texting is ruining our society. It makes me feel so old and wise at 28 years, because none of that crap was around when I was a teen.
