Art Boner: Metro Transit GIFs by Ben Lanksy

Welcome to the new (possibly recurring) Tangential Feature: Art Boner.

The Tangential currently has a raging Art Boner for the Metro Transit Animated Portraits series by local photographer Ben Lanksy, 2010 University of Minnesota graduate with a BFA in Photography.

Here is just a glimpse of the awesomeness (you can find tons more here):

A little about the project:

For this series Lansky puts everyday subjects on repeat. Riding public transportation to work nearly every day provides the opportunity to see many walks of life. While traveling on the bus, these unsuspecting subjects take little notice of Lansky and his iPhone. Thanks to an iPhone application, Lansky is able to capture 8 rapid-fire images of these commuters within two seconds. During this time, whatever movements made by the subject are then recorded as a GIF, or graphics interchange format, a series of images set on repeat to create a moving picture.  When repeated, these short recordings of a person’s physical actions look unnatural and demented. Viewing Lansky’s series as one, we see his subjects stuck in a moment they can never escape, forcing us to ponder how stuck we are in our own everyday lives.

Sweet.

Check out more of his work on his website and be sure not to miss his upcoming show at Cliche on February 25th.

Sarah Heuer discovered Ben Lanksy by being a creepy stalker and tried very hard to keep it to herself but only succeeded for less than 24 hours because proliferating bomb art is more important than her reputation, right?
