The Tangential

Don't be boring. Don't suck.

Creative Writing Prompts

Imagine you’re a crack in the sidewalk.
– Have you always known you were a crack in the sidewalk? If not, how did you realize it?
– How do you feel about the adjoining panels of concrete?
– What’s winter like?

Imagine you’re God on the dance floor. Not just a god on the dance floor, but actually God on the dance floor.
– Describe your God-like dance moves.
– What are the theological implications of this?
– Do others know you’re God?

Imagine what mail will be like in 100 years.
– Will you be able to touch it at all? Would anyone even want to?
– Will it be beamed directly to your head, and if so, do you need a special implant for it or can the mail somehow find your brain on its own?
– How will the Postal Service pay the pensions of its surviving employees?

Imagine sex in space.
– Could you find a private corner on the International Space Station, or would you need to be okay with everyone watching?
– When it came time to climax, would you be distracted by the fact that you’re in space (and, if applicable, that everyone’s watching)?
– Would you try to cuddle, or not even bother?

Imagine someone learning for the first time that koalas are actually kind of coarse and not all that cuddly.
– Why did he or she think in the first place that koalas would be cuddly?
– Is he or she Australian—and if so, why did it take him or her so long to come to this revelation?
– What other beliefs about animals does this revelation call into question?

Imagine you’re a mustache.
– How are you shaved? Does it hurt?
– Do you sympathize with your owner, or do you have a mind of your own? If the latter, what might be in your power to interfere with his (or her) agenda?
– Are you the same mustache over the years, or does your lifespan only last until your hair is completely replaced? (For background, research the Ship of Theseus.)

Imagine a parable involving a jump drive and a pro football player.
– What is, or was, stored on the jump drive? How does it relate to football?
– What happened to, or with, the jump drive? What lesson was learned?
– BONUS: Describe the way it feels for the big, beefy hands of a football player to manipulate a small electronic object. What other small objects has this player had difficulty manipulating?

Imagine you’re a blogger writing a list of creative writing prompts.
– Why are you doing this?
– Why are you doing this while unhappily awake at 5:47 AM? Why can’t you sleep? Is it because you’re stressed about the need to continually provide content for a blog? Why do you feel this need? Does the blog pay you anything? Does the blog earn you the respect and admiration of others? Specifically, does a list of bizarre creative writing prompts earn you the respect and admiration of others? Why or why not? Do these questions actually have answers? Why or why not?
– OPTIONAL: What else could you be doing with your time?
